ZooLights & Canned Food Drive 2012

Exchange at the Oregon Zoo! This includes a food drive to benefit

Oregon Food Bank. Most wanted foods include canned meats, canned

and boxed meals, boxed pastas, rice, and cereals.

You’re invited to the annual Sylvan-Highlands ZooLights Cookie Exchange at the Oregon Zoo! This includes a food drive to benefit Oregon Food Bank. Most wanted foods include canned meats, canned and boxed meals, boxed pastas, rice, and cereals.

On Thursday, November 29th, stop by the Oregon Zoo office between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. to drop off your donated item for the food bank and pick up your complimentary zoo pass as a SHNA member. Then head to classrooms 1 & 2 across from the primates — look for the SHNA banner. Drink some cider, share your cookies and team up with your neighbors to explore the lights. We have a piñata for kids at 6:30 before you head out to enjoy the lights!

Hazardous Waste neighborhood "Round up" July 28

Here's your chance to rid your home of old paints, petroleum products, all kinds of batteries, compact fluorescent lightbulbs, insecticides, and anything you think is poisonous or hazardous to our environment or water supply.

This pick up is FREE to Southwest neighborhoods, and will not only save you gas and time by not having to drive to the transfer station near St. Helen's Rd, but will also save you the cost of paying dump fees at the transfer station. It also is the closest to our SW Portland neighborhood.

And, most importantly, it helps keep the environment clean.

Summer Events with Noise impacts at Oregon Zoo

Summer Events are about to begin at the Oregon Zoo.

The Zoo would like to notify our Neighbors about events at the zoo this Summer that impact our neighborhood. In June 1 there is the Zoo Brew, June 22 the B-52's come to town, and on June 24 we will have Jimmy Cliff. Many other events will happen in July, August and September.

SOLV Earth Day Neighborhood CleanUp 2012

It's time for the SOLV Neighborhood Clean-Up again!

Sylvan-Highlands neighbors host the 12th consecutive neighborhood cleanup to collect roadside trash in our neighborhood, including a large section of Washington Park, Hoyt Arboretum and the Oregon Zoo.

Past cleanups resulted in trash-free roadsides, tires removed from hillsides and the pride of a job well done.

Next Saturday April 21 from 9AM - 1:00PM. Rain or shine. Meet at Skyline Starbucks to receive collection bags and instructions. Children must be supervised by an adult. Dress for weather, wear gloves and sturdy shoes. Free coffee, tea and treats all morning.

First 21 volunteers receive Pizzicato coupon. (One per family or one per youth participant.)

New Curbside Composting, Recycling and Garbage Service begins October 31

Starting October 31st, most Portland residents will be able to add food scraps, along with yard debris, to their green Portland Composts! roll carts. These changes apply to all single-family households and buildings with four or fewer units.

As part of this new service, collection of the green Portland Composts! roll cart will increase to weekly and garbage collection will change to every other week. This will allow for additional food scrap and yard debris collection without raising prices for most residents. The blue Portland Recycles! roll cart and yellow glass recycling bin will continue with weekly collection.

With the new service, instead of throwing away things like meat, diary, bones, vegetables and grains, residents will be able to send food scraps to local composting facilities where they will be turned into nutrient-rich compost for fertilizing yards and gardens.
