District 4 Councilor Hears Directly from West Hills Residents on City’s Future

Eric Zimmerman, one of three City Council Members for District Four, visited the Sylvan Highlands Neighborhood Association on May 26, 2026, at Stevens Pavilion in Hoyt Arboretum. The meeting, hosted by the Sylvan Highlands, Arlington Heights, and Hillside Neighborhood Associations, gave him an opportunity to introduce himself, share key issues affecting the neighborhoods, and hear directly from residents.

During the visit, Eric Zimmerman and his outreach coordinator, Trevor Adams, met with 33 attendees and discussed a wide range of city concerns. Topics included the makeup of city leadership, the importance of voter participation in the November election, transportation utility fees, affordable housing development, mental health challenges among unhoused residents, and the city’s enforcement approach to street camping and RV parking. He also spoke in favor of investing public funds in the Moda Center to preserve it as a civic asset and strengthen Portland’s economy through large events.

Residents raised concerns about Portland’s economic trajectory, including the idea of a “Doom Loop,” and asked why they should remain engaged and whether the city still has a hopeful future. The visit underscored the importance of neighborhood associations as trusted partners that help inform City Council budget and policy decisions.

As a follow-up, Rick Kneuven, Transportation Chair, planned to meet with Eric Zimmerman’s Chief of Staff on June 3 to discuss safety solutions for SW Skyline, and Trevor Adams was scheduled to visit again on June 11 regarding irrigation for the SHNA flowerbed.

Next, SHNA will host another of our representatives, Olivia Clark, on August 11th at 7:00 p.m. at Fire Station 16, located at 1711 SW Skyline.
